Fuel Price Hike: ‘Even the Rich are Crying’ – Singer, Yhemolee Laments

Popular Nigerian actor and singer, Idowu Adeyemi, popularly known as Yhemolee, has expressed deep concern over the recent surge in fuel prices and the escalating economic hardships faced by citizens in the country.

The pump price of fuel in Nigeria experienced an alarming increase, reaching N612 per litre on Tuesday, causing distress among the population grappling with financial strains.

Yhemolee took to his Instagram page on Friday to share a video message, reflecting on the severity of the current economic crisis and how it has impacted people from all walks of life, including the affluent.

In his heartfelt address, the actor highlighted the impact of the devaluation of the Nigerian Naira against major foreign currencies such as the British Pounds and the United States Dollars. He emphasized how this depreciation has further worsened the economic situation, affecting the purchasing power of the citizens.

Even the affluent are not immune to the harsh realities of the economic downturn, as Yhemolee recounted his recent experience navigating the roads in Lagos. He shared how a usually congested route from Oniru, Victoria Island to Lekki Camp, almost to Epe, only took him 15 minutes due to a noticeable decline in people going about their daily activities. This apparent reduction in movement, he explained, was likely influenced by the increase in fuel prices.

“Yesterday, I spent 15 minutes from Oniru, VI [Victoria Island] to Lekki Camp, that’s almost to Epe. 15 minutes, road clear on a working day. People didn’t go out? You didn’t see petrol?

“One Pounds is now N1100, one dollar is N850. It cost me N52,000 to fill my range rover and N32,000 for my Chevrolet. That is N80,000 plus for petrol of car. And I will fill both two times a week. N160,000 in a week for petrol times four that is N640,000 in a month.”

The actor’s video resonated with many Nigerians who could relate to the challenging economic realities faced daily. As fuel prices continue to soar, citizens across the country remain hopeful for solutions and relief to ease the burdensome economic conditions.
