Hunter Biden Sues Fox News Over “Mock Trial” Miniseries

Hunter Biden has filed a lawsuit against Fox News and its parent corporation, accusing the network of defamation and illegally publishing explicit images of him without his consent in a 2022 miniseries detailing his legal troubles.

The lawsuit, filed Sunday in New York state court, alleges that Fox News engaged in unjust enrichment, inflicted emotional distress, and violated New York civil rights laws. This legal action follows Hunter Biden’s warning in April that he would sue the network if it did not retract and correct the content.

The contentious miniseries, “The Trial of Hunter Biden,” aired on the Fox Nation digital streaming platform and was heavily promoted on Fox News. It featured a dramatized “mock trial” focusing on Hunter Biden’s overseas financial dealings, which contributed to his federal tax indictment and fueled the ongoing House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

Although Fox News removed the miniseries in late April following Hunter Biden’s legal threat, promotional materials and episodes continue to circulate online and on some Fox News-affiliated social media pages, according to the lawsuit.

A Fox News spokesperson dismissed the lawsuit as meritless and politically motivated, expressing confidence in defending the network’s rights in court. “The core complaint stems from a 2022 streaming program that Mr. Biden did not complain about until sending a letter in late April 2024,” the spokesperson stated. “The program was removed within days of the letter, in an abundance of caution, but Hunter Biden is a public figure who has been the subject of multiple investigations and is now a convicted felon. Consistent with the First Amendment, Fox News has accurately covered the newsworthy events of Mr. Biden’s own making.”

The lawsuit claims that Fox News intentionally sought to “harass, annoy, alarm, and humiliate” Hunter Biden, tarnishing his reputation. Hunter Biden is seeking unspecified punitive damages, any profits Fox gained from the miniseries, and other corrective actions.

“The miniseries is fictionalized; it is not a news event. It was made for the purpose of trade and advertising, and merely exploits Mr. Biden’s name, image, and likeness for Fox’s commercial benefit,” Hunter Biden’s lawyers argue in the lawsuit.

Hunter Biden’s legal team also contends that Fox News unlawfully published intimate images of him, including nude photos and videos depicting him in sex acts, without his consent. The network claims these images were sourced from Hunter Biden’s laptop, data from which was leaked by allies of former President Donald Trump in 2020.

Hunter Biden was convicted last month on federal gun charges and faces a second trial this fall on alleged tax crimes. However, he has not been charged in connection with the bribery and foreign lobbying allegations that were central to Fox’s “mock trial” series.
