Hushpuppi is My Friend, I Didn’t Know He Was into Fraud – Davido
Afrobeats star Davido has addressed his relationship with convicted internet fraudster Ramon Abbas, widely known as Hushpuppi, clarifying that while they were acquaintances, he had no knowledge of his illegal activities.
In a recent podcast interview, the singer reflected on their past interactions, noting that he only knew Hushpuppi socially and was unaware of the criminal dealings that ultimately led to his imprisonment in the United States.
“Hushpuppi is coming out soon,” Davido remarked during the conversation. “He lived life. But for me, it’s not worth it to end up locked up. I won’t make excuses, but some people are okay with living big for five years and calling it quits after.”
The DMW boss also commented on the harsh economic realities in Nigeria, suggesting that poverty and desperation often push individuals toward crime. “There’s a level of hardship in Nigeria that can make people say, ‘Let me just enjoy myself for two years, and whatever happens, happens.’”
Despite Hushpuppi’s legal troubles, Davido expressed sympathy for his former associate, saying, “My prayers go out to him. He was my friend. I just saw him around; I never really knew what he was into. But he did live a good life.”
Hushpuppi was arrested in Dubai in 2020 and later extradited to the U.S., where he pleaded guilty to multiple fraud charges, including involvement in laundering hundreds of millions of dollars.
