I Became Toxic After My first Heartbreak – Singer, Ruger

Nigerian singer Michael Adebayo Olayinka, better known by his stage name Ruger, has opened up about the formative heartbreak he experienced as a child – an incident he says left a lasting impact on his emotional development.

Speaking on a recent episode of The Bro Bants podcast, the ‘Toma Toma’ hitmaker revealed that his first encounter with heartbreak happened at the tender age of six. According to Ruger, it involved an older woman who playfully referred to him as her “boyfriend,” a gesture he took seriously at the time.

“I was just six years old. There was this aunty I liked. She used to call me ‘my boyfriend,’ so I assumed she was my woman,” Ruger recalled.

The illusion was shattered when he unexpectedly saw her being intimate with another man. “I got heartbroken because one day I saw some guy smashing her through her window. I cried. I was traumatised,” he said. “That experience broke my heart. I started singing ‘Imagine That’ by Styl-Plus. That was what started my toxicity.”

Ruger’s candid admission sparked both sympathy and humour among fans online, with many relating to early emotional wounds that shaped their relationships later in life.

The singer, known for his raw lyrics and bold persona, has frequently infused themes of love and betrayal into his music, making his recent revelation a personal glimpse into the roots of his storytelling.
