I Took Out a Loan to Finance My Song With Davido – Spyro

Ace Nigerian artist Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, known as Spyro, recently disclosed that he resorted to taking out a bank loan to finance one of his songs.

Spyro revealed that he obtained a loan to finance his track titled ‘Funke,’ which featured popular artists Davido and Mayorkun. Unfortunately, the song did not perform as expected in the market, leading to a challenging situation for Spyro.

During an interview with Cool FM in Lagos, Spyro shared his struggle to repay the loan over a period of three years. He expressed his concerns about whether he would be able to revive his career after experiencing a downturn.

Reflecting on the release of ‘Funke’ with renowned artists Davido and Mayorkun, Spyro acknowledged that the song initially gained popularity. However, due to the absence of a solid structure and support, his career experienced a decline.

While signed to Upfront & Personal at the time, Spyro’s decision to secure a loan for the production of the song proved to be a financial burden. As the loan repayment period commenced, he faced difficulties and had to dedicate three years to fulfill his financial obligations.

In his words:

“When I dropped ‘Funke’ and the song popped. I had David [Davido], and I had Mayorkun on the song. And after dropping ‘Funke’ and my career still went down, I’m like, ‘Oh! Am I ever gonna rise again?’

“I popped but I just came down because there was no structure. There was nothing. I took a loan from the bank to finance that particular record while I was still signed to Upfront & Personal. When that period passed, I now had to start paying for the loan. That was difficult because I paid for like three years.”

Spyro’s candid revelation sheds light on the challenges artists may face in the music industry, including the financial risks they take to pursue their passion and advance their careers.
