‘I Used to Charge N5,000 Per Beat as Producer’ – Flavour
Nigerian Highlife artist Flavour, born Chinedu Okoli, has shared insights into his early career and the pivotal moments that led him from music production to stardom as a singer.
In a recent interview on the ‘In My Opinion’ podcast, Flavour reminisced about his beginnings as a producer, revealing that he initially charged N5,000 per beat. He credited rapper Mr Raw for significantly influencing his career trajectory, both through his mentorship and by encouraging him to explore singing.
“I started out in music production, and it was a natural fit since I was already an instrumentalist,” Flavour said. “I used to charge N5,000 per beat, but it was Mr Raw who really pushed me to pursue a career as a singer.”
Flavour recounted how Mr Raw invited him to perform as a backup singer and how witnessing audience reactions to his chorus work inspired him to start creating his own music. “Seeing people respond positively to a chorus I did for Mr Raw’s song made me realize I could put together a full song. That was when I decided to start creating my own music.”
Flavour, who first gained prominence with his 2005 debut album ‘N’abania’ and the hit single “Nwa Baby (Ashawo Remix),” credits Mr Raw for opening his eyes to the potential of a career as a solo artist.
