Kiddwaya Faces Backlash for Seeking Public Donations for Benue Massacre Victims

Reality TV star and billionaire heir, Terseer Waya, popularly known as Kiddwaya, has come under heavy criticism after appealing to the public for financial donations to support victims of the recent massacre in Benue State.

Through his non-governmental organisation, The Kiddwaya Foundation, the reality show star launched a donation drive on Wednesday, calling on Nigerians to contribute between ₦500 and ₦500,000. According to him, the funds would be used to provide food, shelter, and basic relief materials for those affected by the attack in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area.

“We’re mobilising resources to provide food, shelter, and essential support to those affected. But we can’t do it alone – we need your help,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

However, the appeal quickly sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians questioning why someone with Kiddwaya’s wealth and luxurious lifestyle would ask the public for money during a time of national grief. Social media users referenced his frequent displays of opulence, from luxury vacations to designer fashion, accusing him of being out of touch with ordinary citizens.

“You have enough cash to light cigars with hundred-dollar bills and now you’ve discovered the power of fundraising? Only in Nigeria,” wrote one user.

Another critic said, “When it’s time to flaunt wealth, Kiddwaya is there. But when it’s time to help Benue, he suddenly needs ₦500 donations.”

Following the backlash, Kiddwaya deleted the original post from his page.

The outrage follows a tragic incident in which over 200 residents of Yelewata were killed in a deadly overnight attack attributed to suspected herdsmen. The massacre has drawn widespread condemnation, both locally and internationally.

Though Kiddwaya has yet to issue a formal response to the criticism, the incident has reignited conversations about the role of wealthy Nigerians in national emergencies, and the responsibilities that come with public influence and privilege.
