Lukaku Honours Osimhen by Choosing Napoli’s No. 11 Jersey Despite Club’s Offer

Romelu Lukaku, Napoli’s latest signing, made a heartfelt gesture by opting not to take Victor Osimhen’s iconic No. 9 shirt, despite being offered the number by the club. Lukaku’s decision comes as a mark of respect for Osimhen, who was unexpectedly removed from Napoli’s Serie A squad following a failed transfer on deadline day.

Initially, a brief update on the Serie A website listed Lukaku as the new No. 9 for Napoli. However, when the striker made his debut against Parma, he was seen wearing the No. 11 jersey instead.

According to reports from Italian outlets Il Mattino and Tuttonapoli, Lukaku declined the No. 9 shirt out of reverence for Osimhen, believing that the number still rightfully belongs to the Nigerian international, even though he is currently sidelined from the squad.

Lukaku’s Napoli career began with a dramatic impact as he came off the bench to score a crucial equalizer in the 92nd minute against Parma, setting the stage for Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa’s stoppage-time winner. The gesture and the goal have endeared Lukaku to Napoli fans, as he pays homage to Osimhen while making his mark on the pitch.
