Manchester United’s Onana Defends Teammate Garnacho Over Social Media Controversy

Manchester United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, has stepped forward in defence of his teammate, Alejandro Garnacho, following a social media post made by the teenage footballer.

Garnacho shared a celebratory image featuring Onana and other teammates following the goalkeeper’s late penalty save during their recent 1-0 victory over FC Copenhagen in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.

The post, which contained emojis, was subsequently deleted due to its perceived offensiveness by certain individuals.

On Thursday, October 26, 2023, the Cameroonian International took to his official social media accounts, urging people not to react on his behalf. He emphasized, “People cannot choose what I should be offended by. I know exactly what [Garnacho] meant: Power and strength. This matter should go no further.”

In response to the social media post, the Football Association (FA) has been made aware of the situation and has requested Garnacho’s comments regarding the post through Manchester United.

This incident isn’t the first time the FA has taken action over a player’s social media post. Back in 2020, Manchester United’s forward, Edinson Cavani, was handed a three-match ban and fined £100,000 for a comment he posted to express gratitude to a fan.
