MTV EMA Creates Afrobeats Category, Nominates Burna Boy, Asake, Others
The MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) have unveiled a new category for the 2023 event, the ‘Best Afrobeats’ category, as part of their nominations announced on Wednesday.
This new category features a diverse range of nominees, including French superstar Aya Nakamura, and several prominent Nigerian artists: Asake, Arya Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema.
Notably, Rema’s collaboration with Selena Gomez on the hit song ‘Calm Down’ earned nominations in both the ‘Best Song’ and ‘Best Collaboration’ categories.
In the ‘Best African Act’ category, Asake, Burna Boy, Cameroonian artist Libianca, Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz, and South Africa’s Tyler ICU received nominations.
Burna Boy also earned a nomination for ‘Best Live Performer,’ competing alongside global acts like BeyoncĂ©, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, and others.
American singer Taylor Swift dominated the nominations with a total of seven, including ‘Best Artist,’ ‘Best Song,’ and ‘Best Video’ for her single ‘Anti-Hero.’
The highly anticipated 2023 MTV EMAs are set to take place on November 5, 2023, in the vibrant city of Paris, France.
