Nestlé Recalls Over 440,000 Starbucks Holiday Mugs Due to Safety Concerns

Nestlé USA has issued a recall for more than 440,000 metallic Starbucks-branded holiday mugs due to potential risks of overheating or breakage when exposed to microwaving or hot liquids, posing burn and cut hazards.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, there have been 12 reported incidents of the mugs overheating or breaking, resulting in 10 injuries. These injuries include severe burns and blisters on hands or fingers, as well as one instance of a finger cut requiring medical attention.

The affected holiday mug sets were not directly sold in Starbucks stores but were available online and in-store at retailers like Target, Walmart, and Nexcom, the military retail outlet. Sold from November 2023 to January 2024, the sets were priced at approximately $10, $13, or $20.

Each gift set comprised a ceramic mug coated with metallic material bearing Starbucks branding, available in 11 oz and 16 oz sizes. The four gift sets subject to the recall were the Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs, Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug, Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug, and Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug.

Consumers are advised to discontinue using the mugs immediately and can return them to the point of purchase or contact Nestlé USA for a full refund.

To facilitate the refund process, customers are directed to visit the Nestlé USA contact page, select “Complaint” under the “Leave Us a Message” section, choose “Recall” from the drop-down menu, attach a photo of the mug or gift set identifier code, complete the form, and submit it as per instructions provided by the CPSC.
