Nintendo Switch 2 Gains Momentum as Hundreds of Developers Gear Up for 2024 Launch

Amidst persistent rumours and speculation, the prospect of the Nintendo Switch 2 hitting the market in 2024 seems increasingly likely, fueled by an influx of developers reportedly working on games for the anticipated console. While Nintendo has yet to provide official confirmation, the surge in developer involvement suggests significant progress towards the successor of the immensely successful Nintendo Switch.

Since its launch in March 2017, the Nintendo Switch has secured its place as the third best-selling console of all time, boasting an impressive 132.46 million unit sales. Despite the continued success of the Switch, including the introduction of the OLED model, signs of ageing and declining YoY dollar sales have prompted widespread anticipation for the next-generation device.

Rumours surrounding the Switch 2 have been circulating for years, gaining momentum in the past 12 months with reports of dev kits shipping to studios and closed-door presentations during Gamescom 2023. The latest development comes from a ‘State of the Game Industry’ report presented at GDC 2024, revealing that out of 3,000 participating developers, 8% (240 developers) are actively working on projects for the upcoming Switch 2.

While the survey indicated that the Switch 2 didn’t top the list of platforms currently intriguing developers, garnering 32% interest, it should be noted that the console hasn’t been released yet. The PlayStation 5 and PC emerged as more appealing choices at 38% and 35%, respectively. The original Switch, although a popular platform, was selected by 25% of participants.

Despite Nintendo’s consistent dismissal of Switch 2 rumours, the substantial number of developers reportedly engaged in projects for the upcoming console suggests a more intricate reality. It’s possible that some developers are bound by nondisclosure agreements, limiting the extent to which they can discuss their involvement with the Switch 2.

Speculations about the Switch 2’s design vary, with some expecting iterative changes rather than a radical overhaul. Predictions include improved hardware while maintaining a price point of $400, and game prices may align with other consoles at $70. As the gaming community eagerly awaits official announcements from Nintendo, the increasing momentum of developer engagement points towards a promising launch for the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2024.
