The shortlist for the 96th Academy Awards, announced on Tuesday (23.01.24), showcases the film, starring Cillian Murphy as the renowned theoretical physicist, at the forefront of the prestigious event.

The film has earned nominations across major categories, including Best Picture, with filmmaker Christopher Nolan contending for Best Director, and Cillian Murphy nominated for Actor in a Leading Role. Murphy faces formidable competition in his category, including Bradley Cooper for ‘Maestro,’ Colman Domingo for ‘Rustin,’ Paul Giamatti for ‘The Holdovers,’ and Jeffrey Wright for ‘American Fiction.’ The Actress in a Leading Role category includes notable performances by Lily Gladstone, Annette Bening, Sandra Hüller, and Carey Mulligan.

After a summer showdown with Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie,’ which grossed nearly $1.5 billion at the box office compared to ‘Oppenheimer’s’ $953.8 million, the two films are set to go head-to-head once again for the coveted Best Picture award. Other nominees in this category include ‘American Fiction,’ ‘Anatomy of a Fall,’ ‘The Holdovers,’ ‘Maestro,’ ‘Past Lives,’ and ‘The Zone of Interest.’

‘Barbie’ received a total of eight nods, with Ryan Gosling nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Additionally, the character Ken’s song ‘I’m Just Ken’ is up for Best Original Song, alongside the Billie Eilish track ‘What Was I Made For?’ featured in the closing section of the film.
