R. Kelly Hospitalized After Alleged Overdose in Prison, Attorney Claims Life in Danger
R&B singer R. Kelly was reportedly hospitalized after an alleged medication overdose while serving his 30-year sentence at a federal prison in North Carolina, according to new court documents filed by his attorney.
In the filing submitted on Monday, Kelly’s lawyer, Beau B. Brindley, claimed that a prison officer overseeing solitary confinement directed the artist to take an excessive dose of his prescribed medication on the night of June 12. The next morning, the singer allegedly collapsed in his cell after waking up feeling dizzy and weak. According to the court filing, he lost consciousness while attempting to crawl to his cell door.
Kelly was then transported to Duke University Hospital, where, his attorney says, doctors informed him that the amount of medication in his system was dangerously high and could have proven fatal. During his two-day hospitalization, Kelly was also reportedly diagnosed with severe blood clots in both his legs and lungs.
Brindley alleges that despite medical advice to the contrary, prison officials denied Kelly a recommended surgical procedure and returned him to solitary confinement before his condition had stabilized. The legal team is now renewing its request for a temporary release to home confinement, warning that without proper treatment, Kelly’s health may rapidly deteriorate.
“This man’s life is in danger,” Brindley stated, urging the court to act swiftly.
Federal prosecutors have pushed back on the claims, accusing Kelly and his legal team of trying to manipulate public perception and the legal process. They noted that the motion was filed in a court that no longer has jurisdiction over his case, and suggested the timing and nature of the claims were intended to attract media attention and public sympathy.
This latest development comes just months after Kelly’s legal team alleged that he was the target of a murder plot within the prison, reportedly involving members of the Aryan Brotherhood. Kelly maintains that he is being singled out behind bars and continues to claim he is not receiving adequate medical care.
Kelly is serving a 30-year prison sentence following his 2022 conviction on federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges in New York. He also faces additional charges in Illinois.
