Rich Folks Have Weaponised Poverty to Make Poor Worship Them – Wizkid
Afrobeats superstar Ayodeji Balogun, known globally as Wizkid, has sparked controversy by claiming that Nigeria’s wealthy elite have “weaponised poverty” to gain reverence from the poor. His remarks, shared on social media, also included personal jabs at fellow musician Davido.
Wizkid took to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, accusing the rich in Nigeria of intentionally using poverty as a tool to make the less fortunate “worship” them. He suggested that many of those in power deliberately maintain these societal divides for their benefit.
This statement was part of a broader social media tirade in which Wizkid targeted Davido, referring to him as a “spoilt rich kid.” The feud, which began earlier in the week, saw Wizkid claim that despite Davido’s privileged background, he, Wizkid, is more successful and wealthier.
In a series of tweets, Wizkid harshly criticised Davido, saying: “First off, you’re not as fly as me, can’t sing or make music like me, you can’t dress, you don’t make more money than me… F*ck you and your dad’s money, we got ours!”
He further accused Davido of surrounding himself with impoverished people to bolster his self-image. “Naija is a place the rich weaponise poverty so you carry all these broke boys in real life and get them visas so they worship you,” he tweeted.
Wizkid also challenged Davido’s claim to being “001” in the Nigerian music industry, asserting that this title only applies to his Instagram followers, not his actual influence or earnings.
Neither Davido nor his representatives have responded to Wizkid’s remarks as of yet. The feud has sparked significant reactions among fans and the wider public, with many debating the merits of Wizkid’s claims and the broader implications of his comments on wealth and inequality in Nigeria.
