Simi Drey Reveals Why She Ended Engagement Despite Marriage Plans

British-Nigerian actress and media personality Simi Drey has opened up about her decision to call off her engagement, halting her marriage plans despite societal expectations. Speaking on the WithChude podcast, the award-winning presenter reflected on her relationship journey and the bold choice to prioritise her happiness over societal pressures.

Simi disclosed that although her former fiancé was neither abusive nor unfaithful, she felt unfulfilled and uncertain about the relationship. “We didn’t have a perfect relationship, but he was a good man. Still, I wasn’t 100% happy,” she admitted.

She shared how cultural expectations around marriage, especially for women, added to the complexity of her decision. “In this part of the world, marriage is heavily emphasised. My parents never pressured me, but I constantly faced questions from friends about when I’d get married,” she explained.

Despite her initial apprehension, she accepted his proposal. However, her unease persisted. Simi recounted how her mother had intuitively sensed her reservations and cautioned her not to proceed. “When I told her I was engaged, she said, ‘Simi, don’t do this.’ She could tell I wasn’t completely at peace,” she said.

The turning point came after two months of reflection, when Simi decided to address the state of the relationship. “I told my fiancé we needed to work on our relationship before thinking about marriage,” she said. Eventually, she ended the engagement, choosing to remain true to herself despite facing criticism.

“Being single and happy is better than being married and miserable,” she declared, emphasising that respect and equality are non-negotiable for her in a relationship.

Simi’s candid revelation sheds light on the challenges of navigating societal expectations while prioritising personal well-being and authenticity.
