Tiwa Savage Opens Up About Divorce from TeeBillz: “I Didn’t Break Up with Him”
Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has shed light on her divorce from her ex-husband, Tunji Balogun, popularly known as TeeBillz, revealing that she was not responsible for their separation.
In a candid conversation on The Receipts Podcast, the singer explained that TeeBillz publicly announced their breakup in 2018 while she was battling postpartum depression following the birth of their son.
“The way our situation happened, he announced it online. I did not break up with him, but I was the one being attacked,” Tiwa shared.
She described the emotional toll the situation took on her, highlighting how she faced public backlash while struggling to adjust to motherhood. “My baby was just a few months old at that time. My body wasn’t the same because I was dealing with postpartum and depression. Only a few people came to see me. Everyone went to him,” she said.

Tiwa also recounted the criticism she faced after sharing her side of the story in an interview. “People were like, ‘How dare you go and talk? You are a woman, and you are supposed to build the house. It’s your fault.’ It was very heartbreaking how the public blamed me,” she explained.
The experience, she said, pushed her into a new phase of self-expression. “It was an eye-opener for me. It made me depressed and angry for so long. Then I became the ‘African Bad Girl.’ I started getting tattoos and wearing bikinis and short skirts,” she added.
Tiwa Savage’s reflection offers insight into the challenges of navigating personal struggles under the scrutiny of public life, earning her empathy from fans and industry peers alike.
