Toyota Issues Recall of Over 1.8 Million RAV4 Vehicles Over Fire Risk Concerns

Toyota has revealed a recall of more than 1.8 million RAV4 vehicles, according to an announcement made by the company on Wednesday.

The recall is specific to certain models from the 2013-2018 model years.

The reason behind the recall revolves around a potential fire risk associated with some replacement batteries, as highlighted in Toyota’s statement. The concern arises due to incorrectly sized replacement batteries in the SUV. If the dimensions of the replacement battery are not accurate, there is a risk that the battery could become dislodged and potentially lead to a fire, particularly during sharp turns.

Toyota explained, “Some replacement 12-volt batteries of the size specified for the subject vehicles have smaller top dimensions than others. If a small-top battery is used for replacement and the hold-down clamp is not tightened correctly, the battery could move when the vehicle is driven with forceful turns. The movement could cause the positive battery terminal to contact the hold-down clamp and short circuit.”

As part of the solution, Toyota is currently developing a remedy that will involve replacing the battery hold-down clamp, battery tray, and positive terminal cover at no expense to vehicle owners. Notifications will be sent out to affected owners beginning in December.

For those who possess the affected vehicles, Toyota has advised using the vehicle information number or license plate information to check if their vehicle is part of the recall. This can be done through the Toyota website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website dedicated to recalls.
