Twitter’s Future is in Doubt as Threads Tops 100 Million Users

Twitter’s future hangs in the balance as the launch of rival app Threads from Meta threatens its already struggling business, with the new app surpassing 100 million users in less than a week, raising concerns about Twitter’s ability to retain its audience.

Recent data from Cloudflare and Similarweb shows a noticeable decline in Twitter usage, potentially due to the strong interest in Threads and a migration from Elon Musk’s platform to the one created by Mark Zuckerberg.

Twitter’s popularity ranking has dropped significantly, falling from 32nd to 40th place in the list of tracked websites, according to Cloudflare’s CEO Matthew Prince.

Similarweb also reports a decline in Twitter web traffic, with a 5% decrease compared to the previous week and an 11% drop compared to the same days in 2022.

Users of Threads have reported higher engagement compared to Twitter, with Alex Stamos experiencing significantly more likes and replies on Threads despite having a smaller reach on the platform.

Meta’s use of Instagram as a gateway has facilitated Threads’ rapid growth, attracting new users and notable accounts such as Kim Kardashian and Jeff Bezos.

While Meta emphasizes that Threads aims to tap into audiences beyond Twitter’s traditional user base, the app’s stance on news and politics has sparked debates among users.

The launch of Threads has escalated the feud between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, with threats of litigation and Musk making personal attacks on Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg’s response, albeit indirect, has been lighthearted, as he found amusement in Threads not being featured in Twitter’s trending topics and responded with a crying-laughter emoji.

The rise of Threads poses a significant challenge to Twitter’s already waning popularity, and the battle between the two platforms continues to intensify.
