Tyla’s Grammy Win Sparks Intense Nigeria-South Africa Rivalry Ahead of AFCON Clash

South African singer Tyla’s triumph at the 2024 Grammys, surpassing four Nigerian nominees, has intensified the longstanding rivalry between the two nations, adding an extra layer of tension as they gear up for a crucial football showdown on Wednesday.

While celebrating Tyla’s win for her song “Water” in the Best African Music Performance category over Nigerian heavyweights Davido, Ayra Starr, and Burna Boy, social media platforms have become a battleground for banter and predictions.

“Some say South Africa won today, but Nigeria will win where it matters most on Wednesday,” remarked a user on X.

As the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s national football team, prepares to face South Africa in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) semi-finals in Ivory Coast, fans are rallying behind their respective countries, turning the Grammy results into a prelude for their anticipated football clash.

The introduction of the Best African Music Performance category at the Grammys this year was widely welcomed on the continent, although some expressed criticism for the delayed recognition.

Tyla, the inaugural winner of this category, expressed her joy during the award ceremony, exclaiming, “This is crazy! I never thought I’d say I won a Grammy at 22 years old!”

Despite Burna Boy’s nomination in four categories, the Nigerian Afrobeats icon did not secure a Grammy this time. However, his mesmerizing performance at the event left a lasting impression.

Nigerian singer Billy O voiced disappointment over the results, attributing it to a perceived lack of genuine appreciation for Afrobeats and Afro RnB among Grammy voters.

“Despite dominating in Africa, I think we are not really well appreciated when it comes to Grammys,” he remarked to the BBC.

Amid the fierce rivalry, three-time Grammy nominee Davido took to X to extend congratulations to Tyla, urging her to “keep soaring.” South Africa was also prominently represented by comedian Trevor Noah, who hosted the prestigious award ceremony for the fourth time.
