Will.i.am ‘Proves’ Michael Jackson Pioneered Ad-Libs Used by New Rappers

will.i.am, the frontman of Black Eyed Peas, has credited the legendary Michael Jackson with pioneering ad-libs in background vocals, a technique widely embraced in contemporary Hip Hop music. This revelation came during a segment from Showtime’s Thriller 40 documentary, which premiered on Wednesday (December 6).

In the documentary clip, will.i.am played the background vocals recorded by Michael Jackson for the 1982 hit “Beat It” to underscore his point. Addressing new school artists who incorporate ad-libs, will.i.am stated, “For all the new school cats that are going on record and ad-libbing, I’m sorry. Michael did that first.”

The Black Eyed Peas frontman showcased the freedom and creativity Michael Jackson displayed in the studio, playing snippets of the King of Pop’s ad-libs. He emphasized the uniqueness of Michael Jackson’s approach, noting, “Why was he yawning on a record though? It shows the freedom and how comfortable he felt in the studio without worrying about people’s judgment or like, ‘Yo what’s that?’ Because you know he was bringing the freaking skills.”

Observing the rhythmic complexity of Jackson’s ad-libs, will.i.am added, “He’s doing all that [beat boxes]. He’s doing all this rhythmic stuff.”

Offset, a rapper known for paying homage to Michael Jackson as a pivotal influence, has also drawn inspiration from the King of Pop in his own artistic evolution. In a recent interview with GQ, Offset discussed adopting elements of Jackson’s style, including white gloves and sequined coats. He highlighted Michael Jackson’s impact on his multi-faceted approach, aiming to be an “all-around star instead of just a rap star.”

Offset’s latest album, “Set It Off,” released in October, features cover art where he pays tribute to Michael Jackson in a black and white suit with a bedazzled glove. The rapper also recreated scenes from Jackson’s iconic “Thriller” video in his “FAN” music video, honoring the late King of Pop’s legacy.
