PlayStation Users Raise Alarm Over Alleged PSN Account Hacking Vulnerability
Concerns are growing among gamers after reports emerged that several Sony PlayStation Network accounts may have been compromised through what users describe as a major security loophole.
The issue gained widespread attention after gaming personality and podcast host Colin Moriarty revealed on X that his PlayStation account had allegedly been hacked despite security protections.
Moriarty, a former IGN editor and co-founder of Kinda Funny, shared that he had received a warning message from another affected user shortly before losing access to his account.
According to the message, hackers allegedly had enough personal information to target his account through Sony’s customer support system.
Moriarty later confirmed that his account was compromised but said he was eventually able to recover it through his industry contacts.
Online discussions surrounding the alleged vulnerability claim that attackers only need a user’s PlayStation Network ID and a piece of old transaction information to impersonate account owners during support interactions.
Users allege that hackers then contact Sony support, provide the information as proof of ownership, and request changes to the account’s registered email address.
Critics claim the process may also allow attackers to disable two-factor authentication protections, making it easier to take over accounts completely.
Gaming community members have described the reports as alarming, especially for users who publicly display their PSN IDs on social media platforms or streaming profiles.
Some users are now advising players to remove publicly visible account details and strengthen security settings while waiting for an official response from Sony.
The company has not yet publicly confirmed the alleged vulnerability or announced any immediate changes to its customer support verification process.
The controversy comes amid increased attention on PlayStation-related developments, including subscription price changes and discussions about reviving older gaming franchises.
