Banky W Sets the Record Straight on Discovering Wizkid

Renowned Nigerian singer and music executive, Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, recently clarified the story behind discovering his former protege, Wizkid. Contrary to popular belief that Wizkid was discovered on social media, Banky W revealed that he found the ‘Ojuelegba’ crooner while he was in the studio.

In a video message gaining traction, Banky W addressed the misconception around an old tweet from Wizkid, stating that the tweet urging him to sign the artist was a playful exchange. He emphasized that Wizkid was already signed at that time, and the social media interaction was a light-hearted moment.

Banky W shared valuable advice for aspiring talents, urging them to let God and their potential helpers find them engaged in their craft. He emphasized the importance of being active in their pursuits rather than relying solely on online presence.

Recalling the actual discovery of Wizkid, Banky W revealed, “I didn’t find Wizkid from him tweeting; I found him while he was working. I heard his music when I was just listening to a bunch of unsigned artists.” He highlighted that Wizkid had already recorded a chorus with M.I. even before joining forces with him.

Banky W debunked the notion that the Twitter exchange initiated their collaboration, stating, “We were just being playful at the time when those tweets were sent.” He further shared an anecdote about Wizkid serving as a backup singer for Kellz at an event, showcasing the artist’s dedication to his craft.

The singer-turned-pastor emphasized that he and Wizkid had been working together for about a year before the playful tweets, putting an end to the speculation surrounding the discovery of the Afrobeat sensation.

Banky W signed Wizkid to his label, Empire Mates Entertainment, in 2009, marking the beginning of Wizkid’s remarkable journey to international stardom.
