Cut Your Beard Before You Ban Dreadlocks – Daddy Showkey Tells Niger’s Governor Bago
Veteran Nigerian musician Daddy Showkey has taken a swipe at Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, over his recent directive ordering the arrest of individuals wearing dreadlocks.
Governor Bago, during a security meeting in Minna on Tuesday, instructed security agencies to clamp down on people with dreadlocks, claiming it was part of measures to tackle the rising insecurity in the state capital.
Reacting in a post on Instagram on Thursday, Daddy Showkey, famously known for his iconic dreadlocks, criticised the governor’s approach, questioning the link between dreadlocks and criminality. He also announced that he would be cancelling his planned visit to Niger State following the governor’s remarks.
In his post, the music star challenged Governor Bago to shave off his own beard if he believed physical appearance was tied to security issues.
“Mohammed Umar, is dreadlocks really your problem? I was planning to visit Minna, but now that you’ve instructed your security agents to cut people’s hair, I’ll stay away. Before you cut anyone’s dreadlocks, cut off your own beard first,” Daddy Showkey wrote.
His reaction has sparked conversations online about discrimination based on appearance and the broader implications of such directives.
