Inside The Notorious B.I.G.’s Studio: Deep Dive into His Creative Process Revealed

In the most recent episode of HipHopDX’s “Deep Dive” series, an exploration of The Notorious B.I.G.’s creative process takes centre stage, offering an insightful view into the late rap legend’s studio methods.

The 22-minute video delves into the personal aspects of Biggie’s work process, featuring anecdotes from close friends and collaborators such as Lil Kim, Jadakiss, DJ Premier, Ma$e, Krayzie Bone, Too $hort, and DJ Clark Kent.

Despite Biggie’s reputation as a prolific artist with an effortless flow, the episode showcases a meticulous approach to songcraft. The late rapper was known for his calculated methods, as revealed in clips of Diddy teasing him in the studio for taking an entire “30 days” to write a single song.

Additionally, DJ Premier shared an account of waiting around the studio for “eight or nine hours” without witnessing Biggie writing a single line. Biggie explained that he didn’t use paper to write his lyrics, showcasing his incredible ability as an MC and lyricist.

The episode also features DJ Clark Kent, who produced tracks such as “Sky’s the Limit” and “Brooklyn’s Finest,” recounting how Biggie was inspired to abandon pen and paper after observing JAY-Z composing verses entirely in his head.

Beyond his talent, Biggie’s tireless work ethic was underscored in the episode. Clark Kent recalled Biggie commencing work on his sophomore album, “Life After Death,” almost immediately after dropping his debut, “Ready to Die.”

Although Biggie’s studio sessions were filled with fun, including a lively atmosphere with women, weed, and liquor, Jadakiss reminisces about the late rapper’s unwavering focus amid the distractions, praising his ability to channel concentration in those dynamic environments.

Despite his status as one of the greatest rappers, Biggie’s warmth and encouragement towards others are highlighted. Lil Kim, a former Junior M.A.F.I.A. member, recalls Biggie’s motivation for success and his genuine desire for everyone’s betterment.

Regrettably, The Notorious B.I.G. was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles at the age of 24 in March 1997. Nonetheless, his legacy remains strong and continues to impact the world of hip-hop.
