Janet Jackson Says She Doesn’t See Herself as an Icon
At the 51st Annual American Music Awards, held on May 26, 2025, in Las Vegas, legendary singer Janet Jackson received the Icon Award – but humbly rejected the label for herself.
Taking the stage at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, the multi-award-winning artist reflected on her journey, emphasizing that neither she nor her family ever aspired to fame, despite their profound impact on global music.
“I don’t consider myself to be an icon,” Jackson said during her acceptance speech. “My family, myself—our dreams were never to be famous. We weren’t raised like that. We always had special love for music, dancing, and singing. Fame came as a result of hard work and dedication.”
Her remarks offered a rare glimpse into the mindset of the Jackson family, which has long been regarded as one of the most influential dynasties in entertainment. Originating from Gary, Indiana, the Jacksons produced multiple musical successes, including the Jackson 5, as well as solo stars like Michael Jackson and Janet herself.
Janet’s statement underscored her deep-rooted passion for the art form rather than the spotlight—an ethos that has shaped her decades-long career.
