Netflix Begins Phasing Out Cheapest Ad-Free Plan for Subscribers
Netflix is moving forward with its decision to discontinue its cheapest ad-free tier for existing subscribers, prompting them to select new plans to continue accessing the streaming service. The transition, spotted by users on Reddit, signals a shift in Netflix’s subscription offerings.
According to reports, subscribers currently on the $11.99 per month basic plan have been notified through the Netflix app that their last day to watch Netflix under the existing plan is July 13th. They are given the option to choose from alternative plans: a $6.99 ad-supported tier, a $15.49 ad-free tier, or a $22.99 ad-free 4K premium plan.
The rollout appears concentrated in Canada and the UK, aligning with Netflix’s previously announced strategy to phase out the basic tier for existing subscribers in these regions starting in the second quarter of 2024. Netflix’s pricing pages for Canada and the UK now indicate that the basic plan has been discontinued, with flexibility for subscribers to adjust their plans as needed.
Last year, Netflix ceased offering the basic plan to new or returning members in the US, Canada, and the UK. However, the streaming giant has not disclosed specific plans for phasing out the basic plan for existing US subscribers at this time. When contacted for comment, Netflix referred inquiries to a statement made during its earnings call in January.
As Netflix continues to refine its subscription models, subscribers are encouraged to review their options and make necessary changes to maintain uninterrupted access to their favorite shows and movies on the platform.
