Twitter, now X, staff in Ghana at the time of the takeover

Sacked Twitter Employees in Ghana Receive Compensation After Long Battle

Former employees of X, formerly known as Twitter, who were sacked from the company’s African headquarters in Ghana over a year ago, have finally received their pay-off, according to the agency representing them.

The staff, many of whom had been employed for just a short period before their dismissal in November 2022, had been demanding the redundancy payments they claimed they were owed.

X, under the leadership of Elon Musk, who assumed control in 2022, had initiated a widespread downsizing initiative, laying off over 6,000 employees globally, citing financial losses exceeding $4 million a day.

The African employees, numbering fewer than 20, had relocated to X’s new office in Accra shortly before their termination, following months of remote work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Agency Seven Seven, providing legal representation to the staff, confirmed the successful negotiation of redundancy settlements and repatriation expenses, though the exact amount was not disclosed.

Carla Olympio from Agency Seven Seven expressed the relief of the former employees, stating they were pleased to have resolved the matter and could now focus on the future.

The terminated staff had previously voiced concerns over the impact of their treatment on their mental health and finances, emphasizing the challenges of seeking compensation from a company led by one of the world’s wealthiest individuals.

Despite promises of severance pay and ongoing negotiations, the sacked employees had faced difficulties, including being locked out of their work emails immediately after their termination.

The resolution came after X initiated negotiations following media coverage of the situation, highlighting the efforts of the former employees and their representatives in securing their entitlements.

This development concludes a protracted struggle for compensation and closure for the former X employees in Ghana, underscoring the complexities and challenges faced by workers in similar circumstances.
