This Woman Charges $480 an Hour to Help Gen Z and Millennial Workers Overcome Their Fear of Talking on the Phone

Mary Jane Copps founded a consultancy called The Phone Lady 16 years ago to assist businesses in enhancing their employees’ phone abilities.

She told Insider, “Gen Z has never had the abilities given to them.” “The telephone was mounted on the wall in every home during my growing up, and we were taught how to use it and make calls at an early age.

People have taken away phones from their families, and now generations have never learned how to talk on the phone.

The director of clinical psychological studies at Johns Hopkins University, Alison Papadakis, told Insider that younger generations were more likely to experience phone phobia.

Because texting and instant messaging have been the main forms of communication for Generation Z and Millennials, she claimed, they have much less experience speaking on the phone. “They are less at ease speaking on the phone since they have considerably less experience doing it. Such makes those prone to social anxiety feel anxious in that circumstance.”

Copps costs $365 for 30-minute webinars as part of a seven-part program and $480 an hour for one-on-one coaching. The daily fee for corporate workshops is $3,500. By using redacted invoices provided by Copps, Insider independently validated these numbers.

Many of Copps’ clientele work for startups or in the financial industry. Her first step is to identify the cause of someone’s anxiety regarding phone calls.

I fear I won’t know the answer if someone asks me a question, she remarked. “I frequently instruct people to phone their friends and relatives instead of text for the next three days.

“The process is terrifying if they aren’t even accustomed to speaking on the phone with their mother. We start with their relatives or a friend, so I can’t claim that I’ll force them to call potential clients because they’d break down.

She uses role-playing because improvising during a call might be intimidating. When someone isn’t prepared to answer the phone, Copps said, “I schedule a time when I contact them at odd times throughout the day and have practice discussions.”

Emails could be more effective for establishing relationships since there is no back and forth and no way to hear each other’s voices. Calls are “critical to demonstrate interest and passion,” she continued.
