MTN Nigeria Reverses 200% Data Tariff Hike, Calls It a Mistake
Telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria has rolled back its 200% tariff increase on the 15GB data plan, acknowledging that the hike was an error.
The company announced the reversal in a statement on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, apologizing to customers for the unexpected price surge.
Earlier in the week, MTN had implemented a significant tariff hike on its 15GB data bundle, exceeding the 50% increase approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The move sparked widespread backlash, leading to pressure from subscribers and advocacy groups.
In its statement, MTN admitted to the mistake, saying, “We know how upsetting it must have been to wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle. We could share several reasons, but all that one na story. We don cast. Let’s just say na mistake.”
The reversal comes amid calls from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for a boycott of telecom services in protest against rising tariffs. MTN has now reassured customers of its commitment to providing affordable services.
