Starbucks Sued for Alleged Deceptive Marketing of its ‘100% Ethically’ Sourced Coffee

Global coffee giant Starbucks is facing legal action from the National Consumers League over allegations of deceptive marketing regarding its claims of “100% ethical sourcing” of coffee and tea. The lawsuit, filed in a Washington, DC court, contends that Starbucks falsely represents its commitment to ethical sourcing while engaging with cooperatives and farms involved in documented human rights abuses, including child labour and forced labour.

During a press conference, Sally Greenberg, CEO of the National Consumers League, accused Starbucks of conveying a misleading message on every coffee bag and tea box, stating, “Starbucks is telling consumers a lie.” The lawsuit points to severe labour abuses and human rights violations in Starbucks’ supply chain.

A Starbucks spokesperson responded, stating that the company intends to defend against the claims vigorously and emphasized its commitment to ethical standards. The company asserted that it actively engages with farms to ensure adherence to its standards and conducts regular re-verification of supply chains.

Starbucks, with a target of reaching 55,000 global locations by 2030, has seen record annual sales of $36 billion but faces criticism and stock declines. The lawsuit challenges Starbucks to reform its sourcing practices and seeks restrictions on deceptive advertising, along with a corrective advertising campaign.
