African China Reveals How He Protected Himself Amid Threats Over His Music

Veteran Nigerian musician African China has shared details about the personal risks he faced during the peak of his career, particularly due to the socially conscious themes in his music.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Beer Parlor Talk podcast, the “Mr President” crooner—born Chinagorom Onuoha—recounted how his outspoken songs often put him at odds with authorities and street groups.

According to him, the situation became so intense that he had to learn self-defence techniques, including martial arts, to stay safe. He also said he turned to traditional protective practices as an added layer of security.

“I am a black belter. During my time, you needed to know how to fight to survive in the music industry,” he said, explaining that the threats he faced were constant.

African China alleged that he was frequently targeted by law enforcement, members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), and street gangs commonly referred to as Area Boys. He added that informants often helped him evade danger.

He also recalled that during performances, members of the audience would sometimes alert him to the presence of those pursuing him, allowing him to leave before situations escalated.

The singer suggested that his ability to avoid capture led some to believe he was using supernatural means, though he maintained that vigilance and community support played a major role in his safety.

His comments highlight the challenges faced by artists who use their platforms to address political and social issues, particularly in environments where such messages can provoke strong reactions.
