Odumodublvck, Wande Coal Urge Upcoming Artists to Tread Carefully in Music Industry

Nigerian music stars Odumodublvck and Wande Coal have issued strong warnings to rising artists about the risks of rushing into the music business unprepared, particularly when it comes to signing record deals and accepting financial advances.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on May 2, 2025, Odumodublvck, fresh off his Next Rated win at the 17th Headies Awards, cautioned up-and-coming artists against accepting label advances without being fully ready. He advised that without a solid musical foundation, signing deals too early could leave them burdened with debt.

“Dear upcoming artist, if you know your music is not ripe, stay away from an advance. You do not want to be owing an organisation so much money. You will die a debtor,” he wrote, stressing the importance of patience and artistic growth before engaging in business negotiations.

One day later, on May 3, veteran hitmaker Wande Coal echoed the sentiment in his own post, asking young musicians to reflect seriously on their career ambitions. “Are you sure you really want to do this music business? You must be very sure oooo,” he wrote, alluding to the demanding nature of the industry behind its glamorous facade.

The back-to-back cautionary notes have since sparked widespread conversation on social media, highlighting growing concerns about artist exploitation, inadequate industry knowledge, and the pressure to chase early success.

Their advice arrives at a time when financial literacy and contract transparency are becoming increasingly important topics in Nigeria’s evolving music landscape.
