Tacha Raises Eyebrows with Comments on Harsh Realities for Nigerians Living in the UK
Reality TV star and influencer Tacha Akide has stirred discussion across social media after offering a candid take on the financial realities faced by many Nigerians living in the United Kingdom.
In a video posted online, the former Big Brother Naija housemate – who is currently residing in the UK – challenged the widely held belief that life abroad guarantees financial stability. According to her, many Nigerians in the UK are struggling to make ends meet despite the perception of prosperity.
“You see those of you in Nigeria always thinking people abroad are rich… most people here are broke,” she said. “The most broke people I’ve met are in the UK. Everyone is just managing.”
Tacha attributed the situation to the UK’s soaring cost of living, stating that in some cases, Nigerians back home appear to live more comfortably than those abroad. She cited examples such as high transport expenses and the steep cost of basic services.
“Don’t come here thinking it’s all rosy,” she warned. “You can spend ₦300,000 on transport in a day, ₦1 million on a car in a week – unless you’re ready to use the train.”
Her remarks quickly went viral, prompting mixed reactions from Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora. While some praised her for shedding light on a rarely discussed reality, others questioned her tone and timing.
One social media user, @oluchiafundu, agreed with her comments, saying, “She is saying the truth 100%.” Another, @godwinrealest, added, “No wonder my uncle lived there for 25 years with nothing to write home about.”
However, others pointed out that the conversation goes beyond money, with @joyaustin4743 arguing: “You all care so much about money without quality of life. How and what is the quality of life of those in Naija with all the money?”
Tacha’s comments add to the growing conversation around the complex experiences of Nigerians in the diaspora – especially as more young people consider relocating in search of better opportunities.
